Over the weekend Essam Salami, a leading activist in the General Union of Tunisian Students, was seized by the police who have treated him brutally. Please take up the appeal of the General Union of Tunisian Students, and write to local Tunisian embassies demanding his release.
On the night between Saturday, 26 September and Sunday, 27 September, comrade Essam Salami, a leading activist in the General Union of Tunisian Students, was kidnapped with two of his relatives, as they were on their way to Jendouba. According to information given to us, comrade Essam Salami has been subjected to brutal physical and psychological violence from the police.
The police charges against him are not yet known in detail, but are clearly fabricated from start to finish.
The General Union of Tunisian Students has raised the following demands:
- Essam Salami must be released immediately, and all charge against him must be dropped.
- The repressive practices of the authorities must be condemned. The authorities must be held responsible for the safety of the comrade.
- The attack on the comrade is an attack on the General Union of Tunisian Students and its activists. It is to be noted that this attack coincides with the beginning of the academic year.
- The General Union of Tunisian Students calls on all democratic forces to stand by its activists against all forms of repression and restrictions.
